CREATING KIDS’ AND YA BOOKS

July 24th, 2018 find a good home for your old books

At 11 going on 12, my son is moving rapidly through genre. He has left early readers and chapter books in the dust and taken an enthusiastic leap from middle grade to early YA. He won’t be looking back.So our shelves have been emptied of hilarious escapades with dogs and zombies, school antics, slightly scary adventures where you know everyone will return safely. So, what to do with this precarious pile? E-bay? Too much trouble. Charity shop? Easy, but they only get $2-3 a book. I want these books to go directly into the hands of readers.

A conversation at Write Links has provided the perfect solution. Charmaine Clancy teaches at a school in Ipswich which needs books such as these to encourage reluctant readers and boost their reading opportunities.

I asked Charmaine what sort of books she would be looking for and why?
Anything for primary school children but in particular, easy to read chapter books like Rowan of Rin or something funny to catch and keep the attention of the children!

What difference will these books make to the children?
We have been making new plans to expand our classes to host reluctant and struggling readers so anything to capture their imagination would be wonderful.
Charmain will be at the Write Links meeting on the 4th August and at the Mini Fest on the 11th August so bring any books along then.

That’s the kind of challenge I love. But Charmaine might need a truck to take the books home.
